About Carine Van Hee

“I’m interested in the type of abstraction where you look out at the world, see the horror and you drag that horror kicking and screaming into your studio and you wrestle with it and you find something beautiful in it.

That’s what I was always determined to do. To learn, to grow, to inspire and to share my hustle with the world. “

Carine’s journey from survivor of domestic violence to becoming a well known abstract artist is a testament to the transformative power of art and the deep connection between personal history and creative expression.

Carine’s artwork is recognized for its abstract qualities, incorporating emotional movement, graffiti type marks and words to establish a ‘social ground’ for her paintings.

In her recent creations, Carine has utilized a method of sourcing words from meeting people, using them as starting points for the social contexts of her paintings.

Carine’s process allows her to question, challenge, and provoke established narratives and hierarchies within our culture with regards to equality and abuse, inviting in new perspectives and interpretations.

If you’re drawing from real-world source material, can it ever be truly abstract? she wonders…
